The crocodile monitor (Varanus salvadorii) is a large, arboreal monitor lizard endemic to New Guinea, found in mangrove swamps and coastal rainforest in both Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian region of West Papua. It is among the longest lizards alive, with an exceptionally long, prehensile tail that can be more than twice the length of its body, a blunt snout, and long, fang-like teeth suited to seizing fast-moving prey. It hunts birds, small mammals, other reptiles, and eggs as an apex predator within its habitat. It is not considered threatened, and the IUCN assesses it as Least Concern.
