The hooded grosbeak, or Abeille's grosbeak, Hesperiphona abeillei, is a passerine bird in the finch family Fringillidae, found in Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador. It is large and stocky, 15 to 18.5 centimeters long and about 50 grams, and strongly sexually dimorphic: males have an entirely black head and throat with yellow olive to light olive green upperparts and bright yellow underparts, while females have a black crown and nape with an olive green face and yellow washed plumage; both sexes have brown eyes and pale brownish to pinkish legs. Its four recognized subspecies occupy separate ranges across northwestern, northeastern and central southern Mexico and into Guatemala and El Salvador, inhabiting montane evergreen, pine, pine oak and semi deciduous forest between about 900 and 3,500 meters elevation.
