Nuytsia floribunda

Flowering Plants

Nuytsia floribunda is a hemiparasitic tree endemic to southwestern Australia, known locally as moodjar and, more recently, as the Christmas tree or Western Australian Christmas tree for its vivid yellow orange flowers, which appear between October and January around the southern hemisphere Christmas season. It grows up to 10 meters tall, or as a lower shrub, with grey brown bark, and as a photosynthetic hemiparasite draws water and mineral nutrients from the roots of host plants through structures called haustoria; its roots and rhizomes can extend up to 150 meters, the most extensive of any known plant. It is found across the Esperance Plain and Geraldton Sandplains and was once common on the Swan Coastal Plain near Perth; the IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
