Crab-eating Raccoon

Mammals

The crab-eating raccoon is a close relative of the common raccoon found from Costa Rica through most of South America east of the Andes, typically near rivers, swamps, and coastal wetlands. Despite its name it eats a broad diet of crabs, other invertebrates, fruit, and small vertebrates, foraging at night with sensitive front paws much like its northern relative. It remains widespread and adaptable, though it is hunted in parts of its range for its fur and meat.
