Antlion

Insects

Antlions are a group of roughly 2,000 insect species in the neuropteran family Myrmeleontidae, best known for the predatory habits of their larvae, most of which dig conical pits in loose sand to trap passing ants and other small prey. In North America the larvae are sometimes called doodlebugs, after the trails they leave while digging. The winged adults, sometimes called antlion lacewings, are far less familiar than the larvae, live comparatively short lives, and mostly fly at dusk or after dark, when they can be mistaken for dragonflies or damselflies.
