The red necked stint is a small shorebird in the sandpiper family Scolopacidae, one of 24 species in the genus Calidris. It measures 13 to 17 centimeters long with a wingspan of 28 to 37 centimeters and weighs 21 to 51 grams. In breeding plumage it shows an unstreaked orange breast bordered below with dark markings and a white V on its back, a fine dark bill and dark legs, and gives a hoarse call; its non-breeding plumage is harder to distinguish, though it has shorter legs and longer wings than the similar little stint. It breeds in northeastern Russia and spends the non-breeding season along the coasts of Southeast Asia and Australasia as far south as Tasmania and New Zealand, occasionally reaching western Alaska and rarely western Europe, and is classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
