Home›Species›Everyday Group›Acrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)GroupAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)This group gathers Mosses and Liverworts subcategory members belonging to the acrocarpous mosses, a growth form rather than a single family, defined by an upright, typically unbranched or sparsely branched stem that produces its spore-bearing capsule at the very tip of the main stem, ending that stem's further growth. It spans the haircap mosses of the family Polytrichaceae, among the largest and most structurally complex mosses, with a rigid, wiry stem and, uniquely among mosses, internal water-conducting tissue that functions much like a simplified version of the vascular tissue found in ferns and flowering plants, the widespread genus Bryum and its relatives in the family Bryaceae, and the rock mosses of the family Andreaeaceae, which split their capsule open along four longitudinal slits rather than through the lidded, hinged opening most other mosses use. Nearly every family gathered here grows as dense cushions, tufts or short turfs rather than the sprawling mats typical of the pleurocarpous mosses gathered separately, a visible consequence of the same single-tipped growth pattern that also ends each stem's ability to keep growing once it has produced a capsule.FactsAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)SourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedSpores 2Acrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Filter Results59 entriesCommon GroupAllAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth) (59)TaxonomyAllBryophyta (1)Bryopsida (29)Florideophyceae (1)Malvales (1)Plantae (20)Polytrichaceae (3)HabitatAllBog (3)Boreal Forest (1)Cloud Forest (2)Desert (1)Fen (2)Grassland (3)Intertidal Zone (1)River (3)Steppe (1)Temperate Coniferous Forest (1)Temperate Forest (1)Temperate Rainforest (2)Tundra (2)Conservation StatusAllLeast Concern (2)Not Evaluated (40)Vulnerable (1)EcosystemAllArctic Tundra (1)Heath (3)Svalbard (1)DietAllPhotosynthetic Autotroph (59)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (3)Marine (2)Terrestrial (45)Relationship to PeopleAllEaten or Drunk by People (1)Ecotourism and Research (5)Used in Traditional Medicine (5)Living or ExtinctAllYes (20)Where It LivesAllAfrica (25)Alagoas (1)Amazonia (1)Antarctica (1)Asia (8)Australia (1)Australia (25)Bahia (1)Belgium (32)Brazil (16)Chile (7)Colombia (14)Denmark (33)Ecuador (4)Europe (2)Gansu (3)Guangdong (2)Ireland (1)Luxembourg (25)Malaysia (2)Maranhao (1)Mato Grosso (1)Minas Gerais (1)Netherlands (3)New Zealand (3)North America (44)Norway (36)Oceania (1)Parana (2)Pernambuco (1)Portugal (28)Rio de Janeiro (1)Rio Grande do Sul (2)Santa Catarina (1)South Africa (18)South America (22)South Asia (27)Sweden (33)Taiwan (20)United States (23)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 59Acaulon muticumAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Alpine Haircap MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)AndreaeaAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Antarctic MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Aulacomnium palustreAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Bird's-claw Beard-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Bonfire MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Bristly Haircap MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Broom ForkmossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Broom MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Bryum ArgenteumAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Bug MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)BuxbaumiaAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Capillary Thread-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Common Apple-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Common Cord-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Common Haircap MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Common Pocket-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Common SmoothcapAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Crisped Pincushion MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Dawsonia SuperbaAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Feathery BryumAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Fire MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Fork MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Fringed Hoar-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)FunariaAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Funaria HygrometricaAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Giant MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Glow MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Green Shield-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Grey-cushioned GrimmiaAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Juniper Haircap MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Lyell's Bristle-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Maidenhair PocketmossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Marsh BryumAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Physcomitrella PatensAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Physcomitrium PatensAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Pincushion MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Plagiomnium AffineAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Polytrichastrum FormosumAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Polytrichum CommuneAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Polytrichum juniperinumAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Ribbed Bog-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Rock MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Silky Forklet-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Silver MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)SilvermossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Silvery Thread MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Slender Mouse-tail MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)SplachnumAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Spreading EarthmossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Spreading Earth-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Star MossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Swan's-neck Thyme-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)TakakiaAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Takakia CeratophyllaAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Takakia LepidozioidesAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Wall Screw-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Woolly Fringe-mossAcrocarpous Mosses (Upright Growth)Sources1.
