Home›Species›Everyday Group›CrabsGroupCrabsThis group gathers Crustaceans subcategory members belonging to the true crabs, decapod crustaceans of the infraorder Brachyura, recognizable by a short, broad, rounded body carried tucked beneath the shell and, in most species, a tail folded flat against the underside rather than extended behind the animal as in a lobster or shrimp. Crabs walk and swim sideways more often than forward, a gait shaped by legs that hinge most freely in that direction, and use a pair of pincer-like claws, often unequal in size, for feeding, defense and, in male fiddler crabs, an oversized signaling display used to attract mates and warn off rivals. Found in oceans worldwide from the intertidal zone to the deep sea, and in freshwater and terrestrial habitats too, crabs range from tiny pea crabs living inside the shells of other animals to the Japanese spider crab, whose leg span can exceed three meters, the largest of any living arthropod.FactsCrabsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedOviparous (Egg-Laying) 2CrabsFilter Results51 entriesCommon GroupAllCrabs (51)TaxonomyAllBranchiopoda (1)Coenobita (15)Coenobitidae (1)Decapoda (32)HabitatAllCoral Reef (1)Desert (1)Estuary (7)Freshwater (1)Intertidal Zone (15)Marine (7)Neritic Zone (2)River (1)Salt Marsh (3)Seagrass Meadow (2)Tropical Rainforest (1)Wetlands (2)Conservation StatusAllNot Evaluated (37)Vulnerable (1)EcosystemAllChagos Archipelago (1)Coral Reef Systems (2)Galapagos (1)Svalbard (2)DietAllCarnivore (12)Detritivore or Scavenger (12)Filter Feeder (3)Omnivore (15)Parasitic (1)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (6)Marine (39)Terrestrial (17)Terrestrial and Marine (3)ThreatsAllInvasive and Other Problematic Species, Genes and Diseases (3)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (1)Farmed or Commercially Raised (4)Hunted or Fished (13)Invasive or Introduced Species (5)Kept as Pets (12)Living or ExtinctAllYes (17)Where It LivesAllAfrica (3)Antigua and Barbuda (2)Argentina (3)Australia (2)Australia (4)Austria (1)Bahamas (1)Barbados (2)Belgium (3)Brazil (3)Cabo Verde (1)Canada (5)China (2)Colombia (1)Cyprus (1)Denmark (3)Dominica (1)East Africa (1)Egypt (2)Eritrea (1)France (5)Germany (1)Greece (3)Haiti (2)Hungary (1)Indonesia (3)Ireland (5)Israel (2)Italy (3)Japan (10)Kenya (2)Madagascar (8)Malaysia (2)Maldives (2)Mauritania (1)Mauritius (2)Mexico (2)Morocco (1)Mozambique (3)Netherlands (4)New Zealand (1)North America (2)Norway (14)Panama (2)Philippines (1)Portugal (3)Russia (2)Saint Kitts and Nevis (1)Seychelles (5)Singapore (1)South Africa (3)South America (2)South Asia (1)Spain (3)Sweden (5)Switzerland (1)Syria (1)Taiwan (3)Tanzania (5)The Antarctic (1)The Indian Ocean (1)Trinidad and Tobago (2)Turkey (1)United Kingdom (6)United States (7)Venezuela (2)West Africa (4)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 51Australian Land Hermit CrabCrabsBlue CrabCrabsBlue King CrabCrabsBlue Land Crab (Cardisoma guanhumi)CrabsBlue Swimmer CrabCrabsBlueberry Hermit CrabCrabsBox CrabCrabsCallinectes SapidusCrabsCancer PagurusCrabsCarcinus maenasCrabsCaribbean Hermit CrabCrabsChinese Mitten CrabCrabsChristmas Island Red CrabCrabsCoconut CrabCrabsCoenobita brevimanusCrabsCoenobita lilaCrabsCoenobita longitarsisCrabsCoenobita pseudorugosusCrabsCoenobita rubescensCrabsCoenobita rugosusCrabsCoenobita scaevolaCrabsCoenobita spinosusCrabsCoenobita violascensCrabsDecorator CrabCrabsDungeness CrabCrabsEcuadorian Hermit CrabCrabsEmerald CrabCrabsEmerita AnalogaCrabsEuropean Green CrabCrabsFiddler CrabCrabsFlorida Stone CrabCrabsGhost CrabCrabsGolden King CrabCrabsHermit CrabCrabsJapanese Spider CrabCrabsMole CrabCrabsMud CrabCrabsPagurus BernhardusCrabsPassionfruit Hermit CrabCrabsPea CrabCrabsPom-pom CrabCrabsPorcelain CrabCrabsRed King CrabCrabsSally Lightfoot CrabCrabsSnow CrabCrabsSpanner CrabCrabsStrawberry Hermit CrabCrabsTriops longicaudatusCrabsUca PugilatorCrabsVampire CrabCrabsVelvet Crab (Necora puber)CrabsSources1.
