Red Tide and Toxin-Producing Dinoflagellates

Red Tide and Toxin-Producing Dinoflagellates is a Browse By group of the Nature Atlas that gathers dinoflagellates, single-celled marine plankton, whose blooms or toxins harm other life, such as Karenia brevis, which causes the Florida red tides, Alexandrium catenella, which produces the toxins of paralytic shellfish poisoning, Gonyaulax, Gambierdiscus toxicus, the cause of ciguatera, and Pfiesteria piscicida. An entry belongs here when its own cited article states that it causes red tides, harmful algal blooms or illness through its toxins. It excludes dinoflagellates described only as living in partnership with corals or only for their glow. Such blooms can kill fish and poison shellfish, so the group lets a reader compare the species behind them.
