Home›Species›Everyday Group›Snakes (Serpentes)GroupSnakes (Serpentes)This group gathers Reptiles subcategory members belonging to the suborder Serpentes, the limbless, carnivorous squamates found on every continent except Antarctica and in every ocean but the coldest polar waters. It spans venomous elapids such as the king cobra, black mamba and coral snake, venomous vipers and pit vipers such as the rattlesnakes, the copperhead, the cottonmouth and the gaboon viper, and largely constricting or mildly venomous species such as the ball python, Burmese python, boa constrictor, green anaconda and the many ratsnakes, kingsnakes and colubrids that make up most of the group's diversity. A snake detects prey through a combination of vision, in some families heat-sensing pits capable of imaging infrared warmth, and a forked tongue that samples airborne chemical cues and delivers them to a specialized organ on the roof of the mouth. Every species gathered here swallows prey whole rather than chewing it, a highly mobile jaw and skull structure unique among reptiles that lets some species take prey considerably wider than their own head.FactsSnakes (Serpentes)SourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedOviparous (Egg-Laying) 2Snakes (Serpentes)Filter Results34 entriesCommon GroupAllSnakes (Serpentes) (34)TaxonomyAllAcrochordidae (1)Bitis (3)Boidae (5)Boiga (1)Colubridae (1)Crotalus (5)Dendroaspis (1)Drymarchon (1)Elapidae (6)Naja (1)Natrix (1)Pantherophis (1)Pythonidae (3)Typhlopidae (1)Vipera (1)Viperidae (2)HabitatAllChaparral (7)Desert (4)Freshwater Marsh (1)Grassland (11)Intertidal Zone (1)Lake (3)Marine (1)Riparian Zone (5)River (4)Savanna (10)Temperate Forest (6)Tropical Rainforest (7)Wetlands (2)Xeric Shrubland (1)Conservation StatusAllLeast Concern (27)Near Threatened (1)Not Evaluated (1)Vulnerable (4)EcosystemAllAmazon Rainforest (2)Chihuahuan Desert (1)Coral Reef Systems (1)Doñana (1)Everglades (1)Gran Chaco (1)Heath (1)Mojave Desert (1)Moorland (1)Scandinavian Taiga (1)Serengeti (1)Sonoran Desert (2)Sundarbans (1)Western Ghats (1)DietAllCarnivore (31)Insectivore (1)Piscivore (2)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (2)Marine (3)Terrestrial (30)Terrestrial and Marine (1)ThreatsAllInvasive and Other Problematic Species, Genes and Diseases (1)Relationship to PeopleAllHunted or Fished (5)Invasive or Introduced Species (3)Kept as Pets (10)Used in Traditional Medicine (3)Venomous or Dangerous to Humans (11)Living or ExtinctAllYes (34)Where It LivesAllAfrica (9)Antigua and Barbuda (1)Argentina (1)Australia (6)Bahamas (1)Belgium (6)Bhutan (1)Botswana (3)Brazil (3)Cambodia (1)China (1)Colombia (4)Cuba (1)Cyprus (1)Denmark (2)Ecuador (3)Eswatini (3)France (2)Honduras (1)India (1)Indonesia (1)Kazakhstan (2)Laos (1)Marshall Islands (1)Mauritius (1)Mexico (10)Mozambique (4)Namibia (3)Nepal (1)Netherlands (1)New Zealand (1)North America (14)Norway (6)Oman (1)Philippines (1)Poland (2)Russia (1)Saint Kitts and Nevis (1)South Africa (12)South America (5)South Asia (10)Spain (1)Sweden (2)Taiwan (1)Thailand (1)Turkmenistan (1)Ukraine (1)United States (6)Venezuela (3)Vietnam (1)Zimbabwe (4)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 34Ball PythonSnakes (Serpentes)Banded Sea KraitSnakes (Serpentes)Black MambaSnakes (Serpentes)Boa ConstrictorSnakes (Serpentes)Boa constrictor occidentalisSnakes (Serpentes)BoomslangSnakes (Serpentes)Brahminy Blind SnakeSnakes (Serpentes)Brown Tree SnakeSnakes (Serpentes)Burmese PythonSnakes (Serpentes)Coastal TaipanSnakes (Serpentes)Coral SnakeSnakes (Serpentes)Corn SnakeSnakes (Serpentes)CottonmouthSnakes (Serpentes)Crotalus AtroxSnakes (Serpentes)Crotalus scutulatus salviniSnakes (Serpentes)Desert rosy boaSnakes (Serpentes)Eastern CopperheadSnakes (Serpentes)Eastern Diamondback RattlesnakeSnakes (Serpentes)Eastern Indigo SnakeSnakes (Serpentes)Emerald Tree BoaSnakes (Serpentes)European AdderSnakes (Serpentes)Gaboon ViperSnakes (Serpentes)Grass SnakeSnakes (Serpentes)Green AnacondaSnakes (Serpentes)Inland TaipanSnakes (Serpentes)Javan File SnakeSnakes (Serpentes)King CobraSnakes (Serpentes)Naja NajaSnakes (Serpentes)Puff AdderSnakes (Serpentes)Reticulated PythonSnakes (Serpentes)Rhinoceros ViperSnakes (Serpentes)SidewinderSnakes (Serpentes)Timber RattlesnakeSnakes (Serpentes)Yellow-bellied Sea SnakeSnakes (Serpentes)Sources1.
