Sphagnum cuspidatum, known as feathery bogmoss, toothed sphagnum, or toothed peat moss, is a species of peat moss in the family Sphagnaceae, found commonly in Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, the eastern coast of the United States, and in Colombia. It is a moderately sized moss with brown to greenish-brown coloring, narrow green stems, and characteristic sickle-shaped branches, producing spores measuring 29 to 38 micrometers; aquatic forms appear feathery and flaccid while emergent forms are more compact. It forms wet carpets in damp peat bogs and wetlands ranging from ombrotrophic to weakly minerotrophic mires, preferring wet conditions without full submersion, and functions as a dominant component of bog ecosystems, participating in methane recycling through symbiosis with methanotrophic bacteria.
