Symsagittifera Roscoffensis

Other Minor Phyla

Symsagittifera roscoffensis, also called the Roscoff worm, the mint sauce worm or the shilly shally worm, is a marine acoel worm. Its green color puzzled zoologists as far back as the 1870s until it was traced to a symbiosis between the worm and a green micro alga, Tetraselmis convolutae, that lives under its epidermis; the photosynthetic activity of this hosted alga supplies the worm with essential nutrients, a partnership called photosymbiosis. These photosynthetic marine worms live in colonies of up to several million individuals in the tidal zone.
