Climacium dendroides

Mosses and Liverworts

Climacium dendroides, also known as tree climacium moss, belongs to the order Hypnales and family Climaciaceae, within the class Bryopsida. Known as a tree moss for its distinctive tree-like form, it has four recognized species across the Northern Hemisphere; the species name dendroides describes this tree-like morphology, and the genus name derives from the structure of the perforations of its peristome teeth. It was first described by Weber and Mohr in 1804. Its stems typically grow two to ten centimeters tall in patches resembling small palm trees, with yellow-green branches at the stem tips and leaves about 2.5 to 3 millimeters long, rounder on the stem and pointier on the branches. Its sporophytes appear only in late winter and early spring, as a red-brown shoot with a long stalk and cylindrical capsule.
