The glaucous gull is a large gull, the second-largest in the world. Its genus name Larus derives from a Latin word that appears to have referred to a gull or other large seabird, while its specific name hyperboreus is Latin for northern, drawn from the Ancient Greek Hyperboreoi, a people of the far north; glaucous comes from the Latin glaucus and denotes the bird's grey coloring. An older English name for the species is burgomaster. This description is adapted from Wikipedia contributors under CC BY-SA 4.0; changes were made. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
