Yellowhammer

Birds

The yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella) is a passerine bird in the bunting family, native to Eurasia and introduced to New Zealand and Australia. Males have bright yellow heads, streaked brown backs, chestnut rumps and yellow underparts, and the species inhabits open areas with shrubs or trees, forming winter flocks; its song is popularly rendered as sounding like the phrase A little bit of bread and no cheese. Breeding occurs mainly in April and May, with females building ground nests of three to five eggs across two or three broods a year, and though changes in agricultural practice have caused declines in western Europe, its large range and population keep it assessed as Least Concern.
