Erebidae

Insect Families

Erebidae is a large family of moths in the superfamily Noctuoidea and among the largest moth families by species count, encompassing well known groups such as the underwings, tiger and lichen moths, tussock moths and fruit-piercing moths, though some of these common names are also used for moths in other families. Members range enormously in size, from the white witch, among the largest of all moths with a wingspan near 305 millimeters, to some of the smallest macromoths at only about 6 millimeters across, and coloration spans dull and camouflaged to vivid and boldly patterned. Adults are found on every continent except Antarctica, and are usually distinguished from related families by quadrifid forewing venation and typically quadrifine hindwing venation, in which the cubital vein branches into four veins.
