Bhutanitis ludlowi

Insects

Bhutanitis ludlowi, known as Ludlow's Bhutan swallowtail, is a butterfly in the family Papilionidae, in the subfamily Parnassiinae that also includes the Apollo butterflies. It is endemic to Bhutan, where it has since been named the national butterfly, and has also been recorded in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh in India. The species went unrecorded for roughly 75 years after its original description before being rediscovered in 2009. Its larvae feed on the plant Aristolochia griffithi and adults visit the flowers of Viburnum cylindricum; it is one of the more highly valued swallowtails in the international butterfly trade, and the IUCN assesses it as Endangered, with international trade also restricted under CITES Appendix II.
