The genus currently comprises between 36 and 38 extant species and eight known extinct species, and researchers expect further species to be described as taxonomic revisions continue. Carcharhinus species are typically active, mid-to-large predatory sharks found in warm coastal and open-ocean waters worldwide, and the genus includes some of the most familiar and widely studied sharks, such as the bull shark and the blacktip shark, both significant in discussions of shark-human interactions and commercial and recreational fisheries. As the genus after which the family itself is named, Carcharhinus serves as the taxonomic reference point for the broader requiem shark group.FactsCarcharhinusConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsClassificationLiving or ExtinctWell-attestedYes 1Taxonomic RankWell-attestedGenus 1CarcharhinusFilter Results5 entriesCommon GroupAllSharks, Rays And Chimaeras (5)HabitatAllCoral Reef (3)Freshwater (1)Marine (2)River (1)Conservation StatusAllLeast Concern (1)Vulnerable (4)EcosystemAllCoral Reef Systems (1)Kruger National Park (1)Everyday GroupAllSharks, Rays And Chimaeras (5)DietAllCarnivore (3)Piscivore (2)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (1)Marine (5)Relationship to PeopleAllHunted or Fished (5)Living or ExtinctAllYes (5)Where It LivesAllAustralia (1)Brazil (3)Chile (1)Colombia (2)Comoros (2)Djibouti (3)Eritrea (2)Indonesia (1)Israel (2)Kenya (3)Madagascar (4)Malaysia (1)Mauritius (3)Mexico (3)Mozambique (3)New Zealand (1)North America (1)Philippines (1)Seychelles (2)South Africa (3)Taiwan (3)Tanzania (3)Thailand (1)Venezuela (2)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 5Blacktip Reef SharkCarcharhinusBlacktip sharkCarcharhinusBull SharkCarcharhinusGalapagos sharkCarcharhinusGraceful sharkCarcharhinusConnectionsParent Taxon OfBlacktip Reef Shark, Species Well-attested Source Blacktip Reef Shark (Wikidata)tier 2Blacktip shark, Species Well-attested Source Blacktip shark (Wikidata)tier 2Bull Shark, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Bull SharkGalapagos shark, Species Well-attested Source Galapagos shark (Wikidata)tier 2Graceful shark, Species Well-attested Source Graceful shark (Wikidata)tier 2Sources1.
