Hooded crow

Birds

The hooded crow, known colloquially as the hoodie, is a Eurasian corvid found across northern, eastern and southeastern Europe and parts of the Middle East, recognizable by its ashy grey body set against a black head, throat, wings, tail and thigh feathers, with a black bill, eyes and feet. Like other corvids it is an omnivorous, opportunistic feeder. Carl Linnaeus first described it in 1758 as Corvus cornix, and its taxonomic status has shifted since: the British Ornithologists' Union treated it as a full species from 2002, while the AviBase database reclassified it in 2025 as one of six subspecies of the carrion crow, Corvus corone. With an estimated range of about 10 million square kilometres and a European population of 14 to 34 million birds, it is classified as Least Concern.
