Home›Species›Taxonomy›PinusTaxaPinusPlant GeneraReference and ClassificationVerifiedPinus, commonly known as pine, is a genus of coniferous trees and shrubs in the family Pinaceae and the sole genus of the subfamily Pinoideae, with species distinguished by needle-like leaves borne in bundles, typically of two to five needles, and seeds carried in pairs on the scales of woody cones. Pines are widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, occupying vast areas of boreal taiga forest as well as a diverse range of other habitats, including the Mediterranean Basin and dry tropical forests of Southeast Asia and Central America; many species are notably fire-resistant or even fire-dependent, with some cones opening only after exposure to heat. Pine is among the most extensively harvested timbers in the world, and pine nuts from several species are a valued food used in dishes such as pesto, while pine resin flavours retsina wine.FactsPinusConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsClassificationLiving or ExtinctWell-attestedYes 1Taxonomic RankWell-attestedGenus 1PinusFilter Results6 entriesCommon GroupAllPines (Pinaceae) (6)HabitatAllAlpine (1)Lake (1)Savanna (1)Temperate Forest (1)Wetlands (1)Conservation StatusAllEndangered (1)Least Concern (5)EcosystemAllGreat Lakes (1)Everyday GroupAllPines (Pinaceae) (6)DietAllPhotosynthetic Autotroph (6)System (Realm)AllTerrestrial (6)ThreatsAllBiological Resource Use (1)Relationship to PeopleAllFarmed or Commercially Raised (2)Invasive or Introduced Species (1)Source of Timber or Wood (2)Used in Traditional Medicine (2)Living or ExtinctAllYes (6)Where It LivesAllArmenia (1)Australia (4)Austria (1)Belarus (1)Belgium (1)Brazil (5)Bulgaria (1)Canada (1)Czechia (1)Denmark (1)El Salvador (1)France (1)Georgia (3)Germany (1)Guatemala (1)Honduras (1)Hungary (1)Ireland (1)Italy (1)Mauritius (1)Mexico (2)Nicaragua (1)North America (5)Norway (2)Poland (1)Romania (1)South Africa (1)Spain (1)Sweden (1)Switzerland (1)Taiwan (2)Turkey (1)United States (1)Uruguay (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 6Eastern White PinePinusGreat Basin Bristlecone PinePinusLoblolly PinePinusLongleaf PinePinusPinus maximinoiPinusSugar PinePinusConnectionsParent Taxon OfEastern White Pine, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Eastern White PineGreat Basin Bristlecone Pine, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Great Basin Bristlecone PineLoblolly Pine, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Loblolly Pinetier 2Longleaf Pine, Species Well-attested Source Longleaf Pine (Wikidata)tier 2Pinus maximinoi, Species Well-attested Source Pinus maximinoi (Wikidata)tier 2Sugar Pine, Species Well-attested Source Pinus lambertiana (Wikidata)tier 2In the Other AtlasesFound InAsiaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject is found.Central AmericaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject is found.EuropeAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject is found.MexicoAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject is found.North AmericaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject is found. The MediterraneanAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject is found.Sources1.
