Orgyia antiqua

Insects

Orgyia antiqua, known as the vapourer or rusty tussock moth, is a moth in the family Erebidae, native to Europe and now found across the Palaearctic and Nearctic regions. It shows strong sexual dimorphism: males are winged fliers with orange red coloring and a white comma shaped spot on each forewing and a wingspan of 35 to 38 millimeters, while females are flightless, with vestigial wings and a swollen abdomen, and remain attached to their cocoons for their short adult lives. The caterpillars are dark colored with red tubercles and hair like tufts along the back, and feed on a wide range of deciduous trees and shrubs before pupating in silk cocoons. The species is a common resident in the United Kingdom with stable populations, and it produces multiple generations a year in continental Europe, though North American populations usually have only one generation annually.
