Barramundi

Fish

The barramundi (Lates calcarifer), also called Asian sea bass or giant sea perch, is a catadromous fish of the family Latidae first described by Bloch in 1790. It has an elongated body with a large, slightly oblique mouth whose upper jaw extends behind the eye, ctenoid scales, a compressed body, and a concave dorsal head profile. It is found throughout the Indo-West Pacific, from the Middle East through South and Southeast Asia to East Asia and Oceania, living as a demersal fish in coastal waters, estuaries, lagoons, and rivers at temperatures of about 26 to 30 degrees Celsius. Adults feed on crustaceans, mollusks, and smaller fish, including their own species, while juveniles eat zooplankton. It can grow to about 1.8 meters long and 60 kilograms, though most adults measure 0.6 to 1.2 meters. It is assessed as Least Concern.
