Acheta domesticus, commonly called the house cricket, is a species of cricket in the family Gryllidae, most likely native to southwestern Asia. Between 1950 and 2000 it became the standard feeder insect for the pet and research industries and spread worldwide as a result. It is typically gray or brownish and measures 16 to 21 millimeters long; males and females look similar apart from a brown-black, needle-like ovipositor in females, roughly the same length as the cerci, and more prominent cerci in males. Juveniles resemble adults but are smaller and lack wings. It completes its development in two to three months at 26 to 32 degrees Celsius, has no specialized overwintering stage, but can survive cold conditions inside buildings and fermentation-heated environments.
