Caddisflies are a group of about 14,500 described insect species with aquatic larvae and terrestrial, moth-like adults bearing two pairs of hairy, membranous wings; they are also known as sedge-flies or rail-flies. Most species fall into one of two suborders distinguished by larval behavior: Integripalpia, whose larvae build a portable protective case they carry while searching for food, and Annulipalpia, whose larvae instead construct a fixed retreat and wait for food to come to them. Caddisflies are closely related to the Lepidoptera, the moths and butterflies, and the two orders together form the superorder Amphiesmenoptera.
