The fly agaric is a distinctive mushroom found across temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere, instantly recognizable by its bright red cap studded with white or cream-colored warty spots, an image that has become one of the most widely recognized symbols of mushrooms in folklore, art and popular culture. It typically grows in a mutually beneficial, symbiotic relationship with the roots of certain trees, especially birch and pine, exchanging nutrients through a partnership known as mycorrhiza. The fly agaric contains psychoactive and toxic compounds, including muscimol and ibotenic acid, which can cause hallucinations, nausea and other severe symptoms if the mushroom is eaten without proper preparation, and it has a long history of ritual and recreational use in parts of Siberia and elsewhere despite the real risk of poisoning. Its striking appearance has strongly influenced the fantastical mushroom imagery seen in fairy tales, video games and other media around the world.
