Living or extinct separates a taxon's surviving members from those known only from fossils. Wikipedia notes "the 41 officially recognized extant Felidae species" live today, while the "saber-toothed cats" of the extinct subfamily Machairodontinae, including the famous saber-toothed tiger, do not. This dimension lets a visitor tell a still-living branch of a family tree from an extinct one.
