Bombycillidae, the waxwings, is a family of passerine birds in the genus Bombycilla comprising three species: the Bohemian waxwing, the Japanese waxwing and the cedar waxwing. They have pinkish-brown and pale grey plumage with a black and white eyestripe, a crest, a square-cut tail and pointed wings, and are named for the red, wax-like tips on some of their wing feathers, which resemble sealing wax. Bohemian waxwings breed across the northern regions of Eurasia and North America, Japanese waxwings breed in the Russian Far East and northeastern China and winter in Japan, Korea and eastern China, and cedar waxwings are found in the United States and Mexico. Waxwings are not long-distance migrants but move nomadically outside the breeding season, eating mostly insects in summer and fruit in winter.
