Pekania

Mammal Genera

Pekania is a genus of mustelid containing a single living species, the fisher (Pekania pennanti), a forest-dwelling carnivore of North America whose range covers much of the boreal forest from Canada into the northern United States. Fishers are sexually dimorphic, with males measuring 90 to 120 centimeters and weighing 3.5 to 6.0 kilograms and females 75 to 95 centimeters and 2.0 to 2.5 kilograms; their long, thin, low-slung bodies have five toes with retractable claws and highly mobile ankle joints that let them climb down trees head first. Despite the name, fishers rarely eat fish, instead foraging omnivorously with a preference for snowshoe hares, and are among the few predators able to successfully hunt porcupines. Females use delayed implantation, giving birth in spring and entering estrus again shortly after, but the resulting blastocyst does not implant until the following spring, producing an almost year-long reproductive cycle; historical fur trapping once nearly eliminated fishers from large parts of their range.
