Mimidae

Bird Families

Mimidae, commonly called mimids or mimic thrushes though they do not belong to the thrush family, is a family of New World passerine birds that includes the thrashers, mockingbirds, tremblers and New World catbirds, comprising more than 30 species across ten genera. The family is notable for its vocal abilities, especially some species remarkable capacity to mimic a wide variety of other birds and outdoor sounds. Mimids live across the Americas in habitats including forest undergrowth, scrub, high-altitude grasslands and deserts, with the two trembler species occupying rainforest in the Lesser Antilles; they range from 20 to 33 centimeters in length and 36 to 56 grams in weight, mostly brown above and pale with dark streaks or spots below, some with red, yellow or white irises, and use their long, strong legs to hop through undergrowth hunting arthropods and fruit.
