Tinca is a genus of freshwater and brackish water fish, family Tincidae, a family split from the traditional Cyprinidae, established by David Starr Jordan in 1878, and is monotypic, containing only the tench, Tinca tinca. The tench inhabits fresh and brackish waters across Eurasia, from Western Europe including Britain and Ireland eastward to the Ob and Yenisei Rivers in Asia and Lake Baikal. It has a stocky, carp-like shape with olive-green coloration, darker above and almost golden below, a square tail fin, rounded other fins, a narrow mouth with small barbels at each corner, small deeply embedded scales giving an exceptionally slippery texture, and small red-orange eyes; it reaches a maximum length of about 70 centimeters, with a record English specimen weighing approximately 6.9 kilograms.
