Trogoniformes is a bird order containing the trogons and quetzals, all placed in a single family, Trogonidae, which holds 49 species across seven genera. The order fossil record extends back roughly 49 million years to the Early Eocene, and the name trogon comes from the Greek for nibbling, referring to how these birds gnaw nest holes into trees.
