Insect Families

Dytiscidae is a family of beetles in the order Coleoptera known as predaceous diving beetles. The family contains more than 4,000 described species found in freshwater habitats worldwide, with adults typically 1 to 2.5 centimeters long, though the largest species reach 4.75 centimeters. Their name derives from Ancient Greek for able to dive, and the beetles alternate between swimming underwater and surfacing to replenish air; their predatory larvae are known as water tigers.
