Common Midwife Toad

The common midwife toad is a small toad of western Europe, family Alytidae, named for its unusual parental care: after mating, the male winds the strings of fertilized eggs around his own hind legs and carries them on land for several weeks, keeping them moist until they are ready to hatch, at which point he releases the tadpoles into water. Its call is a short, high, bell like peep repeated at intervals.
