Pumpkin Toadlet

The pumpkin toadlet is a tiny, brightly colored frog endemic to the leaf litter of Atlantic rainforests in southeastern Brazil, living at moderate to high elevations across a small cluster of coastal states. It belongs to a genus, Brachycephalus, containing some of the smallest frogs known, several of which have skulls and skeletal plates thin enough that fluorescent bone shows through the skin. It is too poor a jumper to flee most predators and instead relies on its vivid orange color as a warning of toxicity.
