Fiordland is a geographical region in the south-western corner of New Zealand's South Island, home to the Fiordland temperate forests ecoregion across roughly 12,600 square kilometers of national park. Its Maori name, Te Rua-o-te-Moko, is sometimes translated as the pit of tattooing or the shadowlands. Several of its major fiords carry dual English and Maori names, among them Milford Sound and Piopiotahi, and Doubtful Sound and Patea.
