Variable-leaved Crestwort

Variable-leaved crestwort, Lophocolea heterophylla, is a liverwort of the family Lophocoleaceae with pale, translucent green leaves that are notably variable along the stem, bilobed lower down but becoming notched or smooth-edged higher up, and shoots that give off a strong, distinctive scent. It grows at the base of trees, on fallen wood, soil, leaf litter and exposed roots in a range of woodland types, particularly ancient woodland, and is most frequent in southern Britain, extending north to Inverness, with populations also on the Isle of Man and in parts of the Republic of Ireland.
