Reticulated Python

The reticulated python is the longest snake species in the world, native to the tropical forests, grasslands and wetlands of South and Southeast Asia, capable of exceeding six metres in length in the largest recorded individuals. It has a complex, net-like pattern of dark and light markings across its body, from which its common name derives, providing effective camouflage in leaf litter and dense vegetation. A powerful constrictor, it kills prey by coiling around it and squeezing until circulation stops, feeding on a wide range of animals from rodents and birds to larger mammals such as deer or, occasionally, domestic livestock, swallowing prey whole thanks to a highly flexible jaw. Reticulated pythons are strong swimmers and are often found near water, and they are also bred in large numbers in captivity, both for the exotic pet trade and, in parts of Southeast Asia, for meat and skins used in the leather industry. The species remains widespread and is not currently considered globally threatened, though local populations face pressure from habitat loss and collection.
