New York fern, Thelypteris noveboracensis, is a fern of the family Thelypteridaceae native to eastern North America, forming dense colonies in the understory of moist deciduous and mixed forests by way of spreading rhizomes. Its fronds taper gradually at both the tip and the base, a shape distinctive enough to help identify the species at a glance, and despite its common name it is common well beyond New York, across a wide swath of the eastern United States and adjacent Canada.
