Darien Stubfoot Toad (Atelopus certus)

The Darien stubfoot toad, also called the Toad Mountain harlequin frog, is a species of true toad in the family Bufonidae found only in the Darien region of eastern Panama, especially around Cerro Sapo, the toad mountain its common name refers to. It lives in tropical montane and submontane forest, breeding in forest streams where its tadpoles develop. The species is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN, threatened chiefly by the chytrid fungus disease chytridiomycosis that has spread through Central America and by habitat loss, though much of its range lies inside Darien National Park, a protected World Heritage site. Because of steep declines across the genus Atelopus, a captive assurance population was founded at Summit Municipal Park near Panama City in 2010.
