The Magellanic penguin is a medium-sized penguin species that breeds along the coasts of Argentina, Chile, and the Falkland Islands, named for the Strait of Magellan near the heart of its range. It nests in large colonies, digging burrows in soil or using natural crevices among rocks and bushes, and pairs frequently reuse the same burrow in successive years. Adults are marked by two black bands across the chest and throat, distinguishing them from the single-banded Humboldt penguin found further north along the same coast. Outside the breeding season it migrates north along the coastlines of both South American oceans in search of food, traveling long distances to reach warmer wintering waters.
