Ecological succession is the process by which the mix of species and habitat in an area changes over time, natural communities replacing, or succeeding, one another rather than a landscape staying fixed once it forms. The process splits into two distinct starting conditions, and the difference between them comes down to one thing: whether soil is already present. Primary succession happens when a new patch of land is created or exposed for the first time, lava cooling into bare rock, or a retreating glacier leaving stone with no soil at all. The first colonists here are pioneer species built for almost nothing to work with, lichens attaching to bare rock, a handful of small plants able to survive without real soil, and the slow work of decomposition is what eventually builds the soil later, larger plants need. Secondary succession starts from a very different place: a climax or intermediate community that already existed gets disrupted, by a wildfire, a flood, a landslide or land cleared for farming or building, but the soil and its nutrients survive the disturbance even though the plants and animals on it do not. Because that soil is already there, secondary succession moves faster than primary succession toward a mature community. A forest fire that kills every mature tree on a landscape is followed first by grasses, then shrubs, then a mix of tree species, in the same directional pattern Cowles first documented in the Indiana Dunes, just running on a much shorter clock because nothing had to build the ground up from bare rock first.
