A division represented today by a single living species, Ginkgo biloba, a fan-leafed tree whose lineage can be traced in the fossil record back over two hundred million years, making it one of the most striking living examples of a 'living fossil.' Ginkgophyta was once far more diverse worldwide before every other lineage in the division went extinct.
