Felid Genera

This group gathers Mammal Genera subcategory members belonging to the cat family, Felidae, the most strictly carnivorous branch of the order Carnivora, recognized by a short, rounded skull, retractable claws in nearly every genus and a hunting style built around stalking followed by a short, powerful pursuit rather than sustained endurance chasing. It spans the big-cat genus Panthera (lion, tiger, jaguar and leopard), the small-cat genera Felis and Prionailurus, the lynxes of the genus Lynx, the cougar's own genus Puma, the cheetah's genus Acinonyx, and a dozen further genera of small wild cats distributed from the Americas through Africa and Asia, each genus typically representing one to a few closely related species rather than a large radiation.
