Herpestid (Mongoose) Genera

This group gathers Mammal Genera subcategory members belonging to the mongoose family, Herpestidae, small, low-slung Old World carnivorans well known for hunting snakes and other dangerous prey by speed and reflexes rather than size or strength. It spans the meerkat's own genus Suricata, famous for its highly social, sentinel-posting group structure, the widespread genus Herpestes, the marsh mongoose's genus Atilax, the yellow mongoose's genus Cynictis, and a further scatter of African genera including Ichneumia, Bdeogale, Mungos, Crossarchus, Helogale and the recently described, critically endangered Liberian mongoose genus Liberiictis, alongside the crab-eating mongoose's own Asian genus Urva.
