Eurylaimidae

Bird Families

Eurylaimidae, the broadbills, is a family of suboscine passerine birds found from the eastern Himalayas across South and Southeast Asia to Indonesia and the Philippines. As currently defined the family holds ten living species in seven genera, four of them the sole member of their genus. Broadbills are 13 to 28 centimeters long, with broad heads, large eyes and a hooked, flat, broad beak, and they hunt insects, spiders, centipedes and millipedes as well as small lizards and tree frogs. They build distinctive purse-shaped nests with hanging fiber tails, suspended from vines. The family used to be defined more broadly, including the sapayoa of the Neotropics, the asities of Madagascar and the African and Asian species now placed in Calyptomenidae, but molecular studies have since split all three groups into their own separate families, leaving Eurylaimidae to its present Asian and Pacific membership.
