This group gathers Mammal Genera subcategory members belonging to the order Primates, defined across most of the order by forward-facing eyes giving strong depth perception, a grasping hand and, in many genera, a large brain relative to body size. It spans the great apes, genera Gorilla and Pongo (orangutan) among them, the gibbons of several genera including Hylobates and Symphalangus, the Old World monkeys such as the macaques of genus Macaca and the baboons of genus Papio, the New World monkeys such as the howler monkeys of genus Alouatta and the capuchins of genus Cebus, and the strepsirrhine primates, the lemurs of Madagascar across more than a dozen genera, the lorises and pottos of South and Southeast Asia and Africa, and the tarsiers of genus Tarsius, whose enormous eyes are an adaptation to a strictly nocturnal life.
