This group gathers Mammal Genera subcategory members belonging to the bear family, Ursidae, the largest living land carnivorans by body size, built with a heavy frame, a short tail and, in several genera, a diet that has shifted mostly or entirely away from meat. It spans the genus Ursus, which alone holds the polar, brown and American and Asian black bears, the sloth bear's own genus Melursus, with long claws and lips adapted for feeding on termites and honey, the sun bear's genus Helarctos, the spectacled bear's genus Tremarctos, South America's only living bear, and the giant panda's genus Ailuropoda, traditionally grouped with the bears despite an almost entirely bamboo diet. Five genera in total make this the smallest of this subcategory's core carnivoran family groups.
