Viverrid Genera

This group gathers Mammal Genera subcategory members belonging to the civet and genet family, Viverridae, an Old World branch of Carnivora retaining a longer, more primitive body plan than the cats or dogs, with a long tail, short legs and, in most genera, scent glands once prized commercially for musky civet perfume. It spans the true civets of the genus Viverra, the slender, spotted genets of the genus Genetta, the palm civets of several Southeast Asian genera including Paradoxurus and Paguma, the otter civets and banded and small-toothed palm civets of the genera Cynogale, Hemigalus and Diplogale, the binturong or bearcat, genus Arctictis, the largest living viverrid, and the linsangs, genus Prionodon, together spanning Africa, southern Europe and South and Southeast Asia.
