Locustellidae

Bird Families

Locustellidae, known as grasshopper warblers, grassbirds or bush warblers depending on the genus, is a family of 67 species of small insectivorous songbirds in 11 genera, found across Eurasia, Africa and the Australian region. They typically have long, pointed tails and drab brownish or buffy plumage marked with bold dark streaks on the wings or underside, and they are strongly terrestrial, hunting by clambering through thick tangled growth or on the ground. The family's name comes from its type genus Locustella, a Latin diminutive of locusta, grasshopper, a reference to the insect-like song of many species. Locustellidae is a recently recognized family, separated out on the strength of molecular studies as recently as 2018.
