Rhinocryptidae

Tapaculos, family Rhinocryptidae, are small suboscine passerine birds found mainly in South America, with the greatest diversity in the Andes and three species reaching southern Central America. The family comprises 12 genera and more than 60 species, dominated by the genus Scytalopus with 49 species while other genera hold from one to three species each. They are small to medium-sized, 10 to 24 centimeters long, terrestrial birds that fly poorly on short wings, staying low in dense vegetation and best identified by voice; several species are threatened because of localized ranges and weak flight.
